How to let DNA Baser pass through Windows XP firewall

Windows XP Service Pack 2 introduced the Windows Firewall which sometimes needs to be "tamed" to make it compatible with some programs. When you start the master for the first time, you may see this dialog:

Firewall settings

Just click "Unblock" and everything should be OK. If DNA Baser clients cannot connect to DNA Baser master, you may need to manually set your firewall.

Note: DNA Baser Network edition requires the TCP/IP protocol in order to function. This protocol should be installed by default in your Windows OS.

Setting the Windows XP firewall (advanced)

Here is the way to open the proper UDP port and make the Network edition work:

  • First, run the software in master mode, and note the UDP port number that it is listed on the master's message window. It will be on the line saying something like "Locator started on UDP port XXXXX", where XXXXX is the number.
  • Go to your Control Panel and click on the Security Center icon.
  • Click on Windows Firewall.
  • Select the "exceptions" tab on the dialog that will appear.
  • Click on the button labeled "Add Port". It will ask for a program name and a port number.
  • Enter the full path and filename for the program file, and the port number you found in the first step, into the edit boxes on that dialog. Also, press the UDP radio button, to change it from TCP to UDP. Then click the OK button.

That should let the clients locate the master and work as designed.

Turning off Windows Firewall

We recommend you to turn off your antivirus/firewall software temporary if you have problems making the Master/Slave to communicate. Below we will show you how to turn off Microsoft Windows Firewall on Windows 7. If you have additional 3rd party firewall/antivirus software, you will have to read its manual to see how to temporary disable it.

We will offer support ONLY after you temporary disable your firewall/antivirus because we have seen that in most cases this is the culprit.

Open Control Panel and click the Windows Firewall icon:

firewall

Click the 'Turn Windows Firewall on or off':

turn off firewall

Check both 'Turn off Windows Firewall' boxes.

disable windows firewall

Press OK.

If there is no additional/3rd party antivirus/firewall software active, DNA Baser should work. If it works it means (obviously) that the firewall was the culprit. Set your firewall NOT to block DNA Baser anymore. Don't forget t reactivate your firewall when done!

How to add DNA Baser in antivirus firewall
