DNA Sequence Assembly - Network Edition

DNA Sequence Assembly FAQ What type of hardware do I need for master?

Any Windows NT5, XP, 2003, Vista or Win7 computer will do it. The best will be to get a very old computer (for example, one that your network administrator wants to throw it away as obsolete), to install Windows XP or even Windows NT on it and use it as master. No other software or special configurations are required to run a master. Also, you can use one of your computers on which you already run different kind of productivity applications.

DNA Sequence Assembly FAQ Do I need to keep the master computer running all the time?

It is recommended to shutdown the master computer over the night and turn it on in the morning. In the morning just make DNA Baser to start as master BEFORE you start your client(s). You can start DNA Baser as master whenever your computer is booting by making a shortcut to the StartAsMaster.CMD file into the "Start Up" folder.

DNA Sequence Assembly FAQ I cannot find the link to download DNA Baser Master program.

There is no separate DNA Baser Master or DNA Baser Client program! The same program (see DNA Baser Network Edition package) acts both as a master and client. To run DNA Baser as master please check the "Starting the master" paragraph.

DNA Sequence Assembly FAQ How the client(s) gets the key from the master?

At start up, DNA Baser client will first search the entire network for a master. If no master is found, it will check the local system for a valid key. If no master or local key is found, it may downgrade to trial or demo mode. If a master is found, the client will get the appropriate unlock key from it.

DNA Sequence Assembly FAQ The web site states that DNA Baser clients communicate with the master via network. What does it mean?

The "network" is your LAN (Local Area Network). Both the master and the client(s) need to be in the same IP range. In other words the license will not work over Internet.

DNA Sequence Assembly FAQ The client needs few seconds to start. Can I make it start faster?

To make the client to start faster, you can optionally specify the IP address where your client should look for the master, or change the time-out value, using an INI file setting. Note that this is seldom necessary. It is however needed if DNA Baser cannot automatically locate the master using UDP broadcasts.

If the network is busy and there are a lot of computers running your program, the time required to discover the master will be higher, though it should never be more than a few seconds.

DNA Sequence Assembly FAQ The client cannot find the master.

Setting the network should not be so difficult. However, there are cases when user's network is configured in a special way and because of this you will need to make complex changes. We strongly recommend you to contact your network administrator to set DNA Baser for you. Just show it the instructions in this page and it will make it work in less than a couple of minutes.

DNA Sequence Assembly FAQ Can DNA Baser be installed on individual computers that access the network?

Yes. This is how it is intended to work. DNA Baser master is installed on the master computer. The DNA Baser client(s) are installed in any computer you want. Of course the clients and the master needs to be in the same network (same subnetwork mask also).

DNA Sequence Assembly FAQ Can I transfer the key to a different master?

Yes, you can transfer the license to a different master (see the 'key transfer' procedure).

DNA Sequence Assembly FAQWhat happens if we buy a second Network license?

If you buy a second license you can decide if you will use it as master or client and communicate your decision to us. The decision is definitive.
If you opt for:

  • master license you will be able to use DNA Baser in a second location (LAN). In this network, you will have a maximum of one client (user) using the program at a time.
  • client license  you will be able to use DNA Baser at your current location (where you already installed it) and have a maximum of two clients (users) using the program at a time.
