DNA Baser Network Edition v2
Setup and registration

DNA Sequence Assembly - Network Edition

Note

We will assume that the installation folder is "C:\DNA Baser\". If you choose a different folder please adapt all instructions accordingly.

Even if the setup process does not require advanced IT skills, you may want to contact your network administrator to assist you with it.

  • 1. Choose your master
  • 2. Download
  • 3. Installing the master
  • 4. Registration
  • 5. Starting the master
  • 6. Installing the client(s)
  • 7. Starting the client(s)

Choose a machine to use it as "master"

Hardware requirements

As "master" you can use any computer, even a very old one that can barely run Windows NT 5 (64MB or RAM) or Windows 2000 (128MB of RAM). If you have an unused old laptop that is laying around you can also use it as "master". A laptop computer requires 3-8 times less energy than a desktop computer.

DNA Baser master requires only few MB of RAM and it takes less than 0.5% of your CPU, so you can also use one of your productivity machines as master. You will  be able to use your machine normally while DNA Baser master is running in background.

Software requirements

DNA Baser is a monolithic/system independent application. It DOES NOT install stuff (DLL, Java, dot NET, services, etc) in your Windows OS. The only file it may install in your system is a small font file (it installs the font only if it runs with administrator privileges).

Network speed

When a client is started it searches the network to discover the master. If your network is slow (10Mbps) or overcrowded the client may need few additional seconds to start. To improve the start up speed of your clients check the 'Improving the start up' section.

Download the Network edition

In order to operate the software you need to download the Network edition of DNA Baser. The key WILL NOT WORK if you don't use this edition!

If you already have DNA Baser Standard (single user) edition installed, delete it and replace it with the Network edition.

DNA Baser Network acts both as client and master so you need download it both on your master AND client computer(s).

Install DNA Baser Network edition on the master computer

The installation process of DNA Baser master is similar with the installation process of the standard (single user) edition detailed here (steps 1-4).

Master installation

  1. Double click the setup package that you just downloaded in step 2
  2. Choose a destination folder. Something as "c:\DNA Baser\" or "c:\Program Files\DNA Baser\" will be appropriate.
  3. When the installation process it done, DNA Baser will start automatically (in client mode). Shut it down.

Note:

  • There can be only one master instance at a time. If a second master instance is started, it will inform you that a master is already running, then it will exit.
  • To stop a running master, use the "StopMaster.cmd" command.

Unlocking the program

In order to use the program you need to enter your unlock key. If you don't have your key yet please follow these steps:

  1. Retrieve your master ID and send it to us

To get your computer ID, locate a file called "Registermaster.cmd" in your DNA Baser folder and double click it to run it. DNA Baser will display an 8-digit string. This is your computer ID. You need to fill this ID in the "Key Request" form received after purchase and send it to us.
Note: You need to send only one ID: the ID of your master.

  2. Receive the unlock key

Soon we will send you your unlock key. On your master computer, use the "RegisterMaster.cmd" command again to enter the key!

IMPORTANT!

The above procedure works ONLY if you have the proper edition (the Network edition) of DNA Baser installed. The RegisterMaster.cmd and StartAsMaster.cmd script files are located in DNA Baser installation folder (probably "c:\DNA Baser\"). If you cannot find them it means you have downloaded the wrong package (you need to download the "Network" package).

Starting the program in master mode

To start DNA Sequence Assembler as master, the user must double click the "StartAsMaster.cmd" file. This will display for 300 seconds a window which will inform you that the program is working in master mode. You can change this interval to a more suitable value. Details about what this command does behind the scene are here.

Hint:

  • To create a handy shortcut on your desktop press the Control and Shift keys (simultaneously) while dragging the "StartAsMaster.cmd" file on your desktop.
  • To make DNA Baser to automatically start as master every time your computer starts, you can place a shortcut to "StartAsMaster" file in your StartUp folder (located under the Windows 'Start' button).

Installing the software on the client machine(s)

The installation process of DNA Baser Client is similar to the installation process of the standard (single user) edition described here (steps 1-4).

Client installation

  1. Double click the setup package that you just downloaded in step 2
  2. Choose a destination folder. Something as "c:\DNA Baser\" or "c:\Program Files\DNA Baser\" will be appropriate.
  3. When the setup process is ready, the program will start automatically in "Client" mode. If the program does not start automatically, go to 'Starting the client(s)' tab.

If you have followed the previous steps, the master should be running (and hopefully registered). Therefore, the client will immediately connect to the master and download a license key. You can start using the software now.

Starting the client(s)

Double click the "DNA Baser v2.exe" file to start DNA Baser in client mode. The "StartAsClient.cmd" file is doing the same thing.

Note:

  • You don't need a key for each client computer. The only key you need is the one for the master (see Installing the master). The client(s) will automatically search for the master (in your LAN), connect to it and retrieve the key from it.
  • You must use the same version of DNA Baser for master and clients!
  • Up to 255 clients can connect to the master at the same time.
